Binary Options Scam? Understand the Risks Before You Deposit
Binary options are often marketed as a simple way to predict whether a market will rise or fall. Behind that simplicity, however, can be a manipulated over-the-counter market model in which the provider controls critical parts of the transaction.
This guide explains how binary options work, the clear warning signs traders should recognize, and how binary options compare with exchange-traded futures.
"Did you know that Binary Options Trading used to be called 'Spread Betting'?"
Binary Options
If you look at the history of Binary Options, it is very revealing. Binary Options did not appear out of nowhere. Binary Options used to be called Spread Betting, a bet, or gamble, on the direction the market was likely to move. The ‘Bet’ was against the Binary Options Broker who controls the direction of the market you are betting on.
Why the name change? Promoters and Brokers alike did not like the name ‘Spread Betting’, as it was clearly associated with gambling, so they changed the name to ‘Binary Options Trading’ to try and make a bet against the broker sound more like legitimate trading. Changing the name does not change the nature of the market.
Before Binary Options became widely marketed to retail traders, financial spread betting had already introduced millions of people to the idea of betting on the market direction rather than investing in the underlying asset. Binary options simplified the concept even further, reducing every trade to a single question: “Will the market finish above or below a specific price at a specific time?” While exchange-traded binary options exist in regulated markets, the rapid growth of offshore binary options platforms led to widespread fraud, broker induced market manipulation, and regulatory crackdowns across many countries. Binary Options trading, used to be known as spread betting. Spread Betting is when a traders makes a bet against the direction the market is going to move, are a financial product rather than a single company or scheme. It is therefore inaccurate to claim that every binary options transaction is fraudulent.
However, the industry has additionally attracted serious concerns involving:
- unlicensed or offshore providers;
- misleading advertising;
- unrealistic profit claims;
- manipulated or disputed price feeds;
- blocked or delayed withdrawals;
- high-pressure deposit tactics;
- automated trading robots with unverifiable results; and
- providers acting as the direct counterparty to customer trades.
The question is therefore not merely whether binary options exist as a legitimate product. The more important question is whether the provider, trading environment and payout structure are fair, transparent and properly regulated.

Can You Trade Binary Options Without a Binary Options Broker?
Short answer – no!
With exchange-traded futures, orders from market participants are matched through a centralized exchange.
With many retail binary options products, the trade exists only inside the provider’s proprietary platform. The trader may be relying on that provider for:
- the market price displayed;
- the expiry price;
- trade acceptance;
- payout calculation;
- account balances; and
- withdrawal approval.
That concentration of control creates a potential conflict of interest, particularly when the provider benefits financially when its customers lose.
"Binary Options Traders bet against the Broker that invited them to have a trade! "
OTC Broker
Unlike standardized futures contracts traded on exchanges such as CME Group or Eurex, many binary options are offered over the counter.
This means the contract may not be bought and sold on an independent public exchange. Instead, the provider establishes the product, conditions and payout.
The page should explore five questions:
- Who supplies the price feed?
- Who determines the expiry price?
- Who takes the opposite side of the trade?
- Who holds the client’s money?
- Who approves the withdrawal?
Binary Options Versus Futures
Feature | Binary Options | Exchange-Traded Futures |
|---|---|---|
Trading venue | Frequently OTC or proprietary | Centralized regulated exchange |
Contract terms | Set by the provider | Standardized by the exchange |
Price transparency | May depend on the provider | Public exchange market data |
Counterparty | Frequently the provider | Centrally cleared market |
Profit structure | Fixed payout | Based on actual price movement |
Expiry | Very short, fixed expiry common | Multiple standardized expiries |
Trade management | Frequently limited | Stops, targets and active management |
Market volume | Often unavailable | Exchange volume and order-flow data |
Withdrawal | Controlled by provider | Funds held through broker arrangements |
Trader education | Often focused on prediction | Can support structured technical trading |
The Binary Options Payout Problem
Suppose a trader risks $100 on each binary options trade:
- Losing trade: -$100
- Winning trade with an 80% payout: +$80
The trader must therefore win more than 50% of trades merely to break even.
Break-even calculation:
Required win rate=100/100+80=55.56%
At a 70% payout, the required break-even win rate rises to approximately 58.82%.
This asymmetric payout structure means a trader can correctly predict the market more often than if they are wrong and still fail to make money.

“Professional Futures Traders Don't Trade Against the Broker—They Trade the Real Market!”.

Serious traders often look toward exchange-traded futures because futures can provide:
- centralized exchange execution;
- standardized contracts;
- transparent price discovery;
- actual market volume;
- Time and Sales information;
- flexible entries and exits;
- defined stop-loss and target placement;
- the ability to manage trades before expiry;
- regulated clearing arrangements; and
- access through established futures brokers.
- centralized exchange execution;
The key distinction is that futures traders participate in an exchange-traded market rather than relying entirely on a proprietary binary options platform.

Recommend that traders verify:
- the provider’s full legal name;
- its licence and regulator;
- the regulator’s official register;
- where customer money is held;
- the withdrawal terms;
- all bonus conditions;
- whether the provider is the counterparty;
- how prices and expiry values are calculated;
- whether complaints or enforcement notices exist; and
- whether returns are being represented realistically.
The trader should verify regulatory claims directly through the relevant regulator rather than relying on a logo displayed on the provider’s website.
Samurai Day Trading teaches traders how exchange-traded futures markets operate, including:

Our objective is not to promise effortless profits. It is to help traders understand the market, develop a structured trading process and make informed decisions.
Professional Futures Traders do not trade against OTC brokers.
Instead, they participate in transparent, exchange-traded futures markets where prices are established by genuine buyers and sellers. Every trade is processed through a regulated exchange and an independent clearing house, providing a level of transparency and market integrity that differs significantly from many (OTC) products such as binary options. For this reason, professional traders worldwide choose regulated futures markets when seeking a fair and transparent trading environment.
